Recruitment and Retention for 2023

It's official our new assistant coaches are Ben Woolf and Ryan Carr, who you ask? Well Woolf is the brother of the new Dolphins assistant coach and is the Tweed Heads Seagulls head coach in the Qld Cup and brother of Kristian currently head coach of St Helens. Carr is 34 yrs old he is currently assistant coach of Parramatta. Hmm time will tell if either are of any use to us moving forward. My personal opinion is neither are well known and it appears to me that they will toe the head coaches line and vision.

I don't think the idiot (Griffin) alone decided to hire those 2. I don't know about these 2 but I like the idea of hiring rookies from outside as assistants. Hopefully come with a fresh perspective on how to run things.

Griffin is most definitely an old school coach my gut tells me that these blokes are just figureheads he will have full control

  • Tyson Frizell (PO 2023),
  • Brayden Musgrove,
  • Pasami Saulo,
  • Sauaso Sue
I always thought Lachlan Fitzgibbon was quite good. Surprised Newcastle don't want him.
  • Kane Bradley,
  • Brendan Frei,
  • Jordan McLean,
  • Emry Pere
McLean would be a good pick up for 2 years.
  • Solomone Naiduki,
  • Hayze Perham
No idea who they are.
  • Christian Crichton,
  • Matthew Eisenhuth,
  • Kurt Falls,
  • Chris Smith,
  • Jaeman Salmon
Don't know who most of them are.
  • Zane Bijorac (CO 2023),
  • Josh Mansour,
  • Taane Milne,
  • Jaxson Paulo,
  • Isaiah Tass
I thought Jaxson Paulo was quite good but Dragons don't need outside backs.
  • Billy Burns,
  • Poasa Faamausili,
  • Jackson Ford,
  • Jack Gosiewski,
  • Tautau Moga,
  • Aaron Woods (PO 2023)
A really big turnover. Sims and McGuire gone as well. I think Burns, Ford and Gosiewski might be worth keeping unless there is a horde of young players coming into the squad.
  • Moala Graham-Taufa,
  • Adam Keighran (CO 2023),
  • Joseph Suaalii (PO 2023/24)
Suaalii was poor at fullback today.
  • William Kei,
  • Jock Madden,
  • Tommy Talau,
  • James Tamou,
  • Joe Ofahengaue (MO 2023)
Ofahengaue would be a handy signing.

If any prop is worth going after it would be the present no.1 prop Joseph Tapine Canberra Raiders who is off contract. In my view he could lead a decent team to a GF. Problem is he may well get the $1m a season Payne Hass was after meaning we probably could not afford him. We badly need a quality prop to make us competitive again. If we are looking for a young player then I would give Franklin Pele a go. Young prop playing NSW Cup for Newtown could develop into a good prop and would be on minimum money.

I think Lodge and Angus Crighton are still off contract. They have both signed contracts with the Rorters but both were rejected by the NRL due to salary cap "problems". i.e. the NRL know they are signing for far less than they could get elsewhere but don't know how the Rorters are cheating the salary cap.

Tapine is probably the form prop of the competition and therefore cost a lot to poach. I like Bennett's way of thinking with props. They should run hard, make metres and not be on a huge amount of money because their job is simple.

These are the current props off contract. As previously mentioned I personally would look at McLean, Pele, Pere from Cowboys, perhaps Morgan Boyle

If we only had 1 or 2 more than could do that

I know Morgan Boyle from Manly is after a new club wants out of the current sea Eagles messy internal struggle would be on minimum wage for a prop
Surely, no more fringe first grade props. We have 4 or 5 of them on the books already.
If only our Burgess performed like his brother did for Souths yesterday we would be in a better position
Like his brother did for Souffs all season.

More good news for us McCullough has refused to retire. Now that's a selfish decision in my view considering he has reached his milestone, his lack of speed means ineffective attacking options from dummy half, keeping younger just as talented players in reserves who we may lose. Big decision ahead next season do we bite the bullet and let him run around in reserves or be stubborn and pick him in 1sts.

So he can see out the year on the bench for NSW Cup.

Lawrie is developing into that metre eaters every team needs because he has transformed his running style. He badly needs help, we have to sign a bigger bodied prop who can compliment him on the other side of the ruck. Molo is not that player, Burgess would be if he was still 1st grade standard and perhaps he may still be that operation on his hip would now be at the best its ever going to get so next season is delivery time.

Griffin needs to pull him aside and have a mate to mate conversation about what is best for the club and for Griffin himself if he is to actually see out more than half of next season
There is just no way he'll be in first grade next season unless there is an injury crisis. I mean, on form and ability but we know who the coach is.

This is a bit behind the times. We have already extended Burns and hearing Woodsy has exercised his PO for '23. Ofahengaue is staying put and you reckon that Uncle Nick wont try to tie up Joey Suaali with rugby yawnion sniffing around. Have already backed Jordan McLean to finish his career with us, but why no Addin Fonau-Blake on the list. Hearing he is also a free agent.

So the snail is digging in his heels. Obviously is blind as he cant see the writing on the wall.. go the cliches. Seriously the suits need to come down hard on this has been and either sack him or relegate him to Ressies, make him skipper too. He may be able to impart some much needed mentorship from his 300 plus game career.

Is there a sport for him in reserve grade? part-time or full-time hookers next season will be: McCullough, Mbye, Sullivan, Hunt, Hooper, Purcell and apparently Liddle. I'd rate Macca last of them.
