Recruitment and Retention for 2023

Just opened my tele sports section to have the worst effing news for this once great club. FO has let down this club and has ruined the Dragons future of Sully our rising half for a 30 something on the downward slide. I hope part of this blind deal is to play Hunt at hooker.. only way we'll keep Sully.
I hope they didn't give in with him about Hook staying on ...... Said before this is all looking like the big set-up for D. Young to take over from Hook ...... Good or bad if there is no other option I'd take my chance with Dean , at least he bleeds Red and White .......

Does Ben Hunt read footy forums such as ours. If he did he'd see with crystal clarity that a majority of fans dont want him retained till '25. Most are fine, tho with him seeing out the final year of his current contract as it wont impact our juniors.
Speaking for myself, I didn't want him staying beyond his current contract. How many years of failure does it take for Head-Knock Young to realise the current set-up isn't working? But it's not the end of the world if he signed for around 750k max. If he signed for close to 2mil, which is what I read, it's a crime for which Head-Knock Young should be arrested!

No way. Surely not. At pretty much any other club, you'd have to say NO WAY but at the Dragons with our front office led by Head-Knock Young, seems anything is possible.

You would think , 12 years of failure and it looks like continuing , if you were in a job that required you to bring success to an industry and you failed miserably you would have been SACKED ...... Yep not this lot ......

Additional signings as well as the club's 2023 train and triallists will be announced in the coming weeks, ahead of mid-November's pre-season commencement.(GM Ben Hara "

"additional signings" ?? "train and triallists"
So we are bringing players here or does he mean our Top 30?
The wooden spooners are cleaning out the playing ranks. We've already gotten their 3rd choice hooker so look for a few more of their rejects to be signed.

Head-Knock Young
You dont like Albert do you. Remember he has only been in the chairman's chair for a year. He also has to juggle factional differences within his board. Betting he was out voted as he'd have preferred both Hunt and Griffin gone so his son could return to his spiritual club.

Until this year that wasn't the case. At the end of the day, it's his job to sign off on recruitment and retention decisions. Signing, by any measure, an average halfback who will be 34 when he stats playing under his new contract for close to 2mil over 2 years suggests he's had too many head knocks to really have any idea what he is doing.

BTW, I wonder what our old friend jodragon40 jodragon40 thinks about this?

I heard Flanno was R/R boss. 'list management' perhaps Top 30 boss too. I think it was jodragon that contradicted me and said the buck does not stop with the chairman.
It's true the buck stops at the CEO or the BOD but as far as the NRL teams performance on the field, the buck stops with Head-Knock Young.

According to the Herald, Dragons recruiter Shane Flanagan will decide Sullivan's fate, which could throw his son Kyle's future off course at the Bulldogs if he gives the green light.(9WWOS)

Flanno is r /r boss. This really is a bloody mess. Hunt greed and FO self interest has caused this.

He will decide Sullivan's future at the Dragons but Craig Young decided to extend Hunt. That made Sullivan requesting a release inevitable.

Sloan set to ask for a release for the second time. I think his relationship with Griffin has completely broken down. They can't stand each other. Griffin will probably push for his release to be granted and Mbye to be upgraded and extended.

Not sacking Griffin, extending already veteran Hunt on big money, recruiting McGuire, Mbye, letting Robson, Leilua go and etc etc. This is set to bring about another decade of mediocrity.

I believe there is more at play here than just too many head knocks, too much beer, incompetence and etc. I don't have any evidence but I believe there is corruption at play here. Like Head-Knock Young, Flanno, Ryan Webb are agreeing to keep Hunt, McCullough, Mbye, Griffin on the books for big money on the provision each of them gives up some of his salary. It's win-win for both parties. Hunt has to give up part of his salary but still gets comfortably more money than he could get elsewhere.

I am done here.. too miserable. Hope better news on new recruits come Nov 1.
I know the feeling....
Cheer up please you two. There are a few things to be optimistic about. Or at least not so pessimistic.
  • If Hunt is on around 700k in the salary cap and another 100 or 150k in third party deals, it's a bargain for the club. Good (but not great) halfbacks cost a lot these days. I haven't seen anyone deny Hunt is "good". I also haven't seen anyone say he's "great".
  • If Sullivan is half as good as we think, he's going to demand a huge upgrade after 1 season wherever he ends up. So at least keeping Hunt, we aren't losing a lot of money in the salary cap.
  • Toward the end of last season, Stewart pushed Sloan to the wing in NSW Cup and excelled. Sloan might be third choice fullback at present. (Ramsey > Stewart > Sloan, not Mbye:mad:)
  • Over the last few years, massively overpaid Norman and Sims are off the books and massively overpaid Hunt is on less pay from 2024.
  • The cricket 20-20 World Cup is on soon. That's going to be good!
Having said that, if they sign another forward journeyman, I might completely flip out.

One last word on Mr Ego.. read his interview this morning. No mention of doing what's best for the club, nothing about because of his greed we may lose two of our most promising juniors. It was all me me me.
The man is also deluded "I like the challenge of playing half.. I enjoy leading the players around the field." But Mr Ego you dont do that successfully, Nathan Cleary, Mitch Moses do, Cooper Cronk, Joey Johns and Peter Sterling did.. you dont. By comparison with them you are an organising bumbler...
