Recruitment and Retention for 2023

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS

Roster spots left: 3
Roster insight: Have re-signed Tautau Moga and will give Queensland Cup prop Nick Lui-Toso a one-year deal. Those go with the additions of Tigers duo Jacob Liddle and Zane Musgrove. Remain on the lookout for another middle forward and an edge back-rower but usually like to keep at least one spot free to make a late-season signing.

So they let go of Sims, McGuire, Burgess, Gosiewski and signed 2 rejects from the wooden spoon team, some QLD Cup player and re-signed a winger who is literally slower than a lot of the props in the NRL.......... No one wants to come and play under Griffin or be under the supervision of Craig Young.

There are the players on the open market I think the Dragons could have a crack at. As far as I can see, the club only needs forwards and keeping age into account. No one over 28 years-old and no "fringe first graders" Griffin is so fond of:
  • Emre Guler
  • Luke Thompson
  • Siosifa Talakai
  • David Fifita
  • Brad Parker (turn him into an edge backrower)
  • Nelson Asofa-Solomona
  • Tui Kamikamica
  • David Klemmer (is he still under 28?)
  • Mitchell Dunn
  • Shaun Lane
  • Spencer Leniu
  • Bunty Afoa

Klemmar, Thompson, NAS, Leniu should be priorities.

The first player we extend has to be JDB. Dont give a fig for any of the other forwards off contract come '24. Be great to poach Tino some how. Offer him more than the Titans are paying.

Well you guys your wish has been answered with Craig Young falling on his sword. Not only does he lose the chairmanship, which btw he was to relinquish next month in any case, he will no longer be part of the club BOD. His crime, backing a long time mate " before he went off the rails" (similar to his own words). At no time did he condone the filth Finch had been arrested and charged with.
He'll be 33 when his present contract finishes.

No one is a bigger JDB fan than me but I think when his present contract finishes, it'll be the right time for him to call it a day. But of course I'm aware of the idea that the 2 years out, 2 years of no serious wear and tear, will prolong his career. He still has 2 years left so no hurry to make a decision.

Signing Tino would be a coup but he won't happen. Dragons are a little too fair and rule respecting to even approach him.

Albert leaves with his integrity in tact.

NAS may be the engine room enforcer we crave. Only 26 (so in his prime), coming off a terrific season. So why have the Storm put him on the market? On 625k for '23.. we can up that if he is as good as his stats say. Go after him recruitment.

He was a club legend but some of his recent actions....... I just can't get my head around it. The Finch thing, using the club letterhead when it had nothing to do with the club was the final straw. It's very clear Griffin has lost the dressing room and a large part of the support staff. It was primarily Craig Young's job to move on this and sack Griffin. But no. He sacked a large part of the support staff and publicly backed Griffin.

Another junior let go.
Lewis Sargent-Wilson, a goal kicking halfback who played for Country under 16s this year, has been snapped up by Cronulla. A clever playmaker who represented Illawarra South Coast Dragons and Thirroul Butchers this year, Sargent-Wilson looks a player with a big future.

And that future will now be with our long time rivals. Bloody well done whoever is responsible..

Having said that, Peter Gentle had to go.

Can't be too negative about this one. Dragons "only" have Hunt, Sullivan, Herring, Wallace and Hooper has played a lot in the halves as well.

Have to admit that baffled me too. Perhaps he has had too many head knocks.
Whatever it was, I can't see any scenario where he was putting the club first. A few theories. The most plausible one I read was that he was preparing to parachute Dean in as "a savior" after Griffin had totally run the place into the ground.

I thought Wests Tigers might save SGI from the spoon next year but they've signed some serious firepower in the forwards while SGI snapped up their rejects.

Next year is looking more and more dismal by the hour.
