Recruitment and Retention for 2023

I rate Suli and Sua but neither are earning their pay packet. Build a team around Amone, Sully, Sloan, Lawrie, Hunt (he's on the books for 2 more years after this), JDB (he's on the books for 2024. Might be worth keeping for 1 more year after that), Couchman's, Feagai's, Lomax.

Rating the 2023 recruits at every club

Wait and see: The Dragons failed to secure any big-name players instead opting for discards from struggling rivals. Jacob Liddle looks like he can be serviceable at dummy half and has shown some nice glimpses in attack but his defence still has question marks. Zane Musgrove and Ben Murdoch-Masila have played every game for the struggling side but have failed to make any real impact.Young ex-Manly duo Alec Tuitavake and Viliame Fifita only arrived in recent days while Paul Turner and Nick Lui-Toso are yet to be seen in the top grade.

Host, Sele and Thompson all playing well for Souths. The first 2, as with Jackson Ford, would have been far better than Mursoch-Masila.

Anyone know what has happened to Luicano Leilua? I know he went to the Cowboys last year and from what I saw, was playing very well. This year, not sighted or mentioned.

Browny coming home? Don't panic just yet everyone..

Dragons powerbroker’s shock move to bring back former coach

Dragons powerbrokers are reportedly eager to reintroduce former coach Nathan Brown into the club’s football or recruitment department. Brown was appointed head coach of the St George Illawarra club in 2003, becoming the youngest non-playing coach ever at only 29-years of age.

The 49-year-old was eventually replaced by Wayne Bennett in 2009 and went on to hold coaching positions in the Super League and with the Knights and most recently, the Warriors. Influential members of the Dragons board are still close with Brown and there is reportedly a push to bring him back to the club.

As it stands, the Red V are one of the only clubs without a head of recruitment. Meanwhile, Anthony Griffin’s future at the Dragons could be short-lived with club bosses informing the head coach he would have to reapply for his own job. As it stands, Griffin looks unlikely to be head coach beyond 2023 and the board will reportedly meet next week to discuss their next move.

I think it would be a great move if it happens.

JDB (he's on the books for 2024. Might be worth keeping for 1 more
He missed two full years, so I say give him two more after '24. Why has FO only given him an option rather than an actual contract extension, is worth it, even tho they probably cant afford to pay him any more coin. Betting he wants to be a one club player.

I wonder if or who a new coach will clear off the books. If it's Hasler, Suli had better learn to play in the forwards or he'll be in the NSW Cup. He has no offload, no step, no swerve. He just runs hard. Would be a great forward if he could make the change. Other than that, the following are surely gone:
  • Mybe or Liddle
  • Kerr
  • BMM
  • (this is a big call) Ben Hunt or Amone or Sullivan.

Liddle just signed an extension, not sure why he wouldn't wait until the new coach is announced, unless he already knows?

It might be that the only juniors from Flegg last year that make it are the Couchmans. I think Coric will as well.

If Hunt stays, Sullivan may look for another club. The new coach will want to retain Amone as he promises plenty in 2/3 years when he matures.
Glad to hear they have extended Liddle.. has been the surprise packet of the season. His skillset makes me wonder why we ever signed Macca. Two years wasted.

Remember when Amone first played in the NRL? Like his first 2 games? He was running the ball and really causing trouble for the opposition. I remember v Penrith, who went on to win the competition, Greg Alexander said, "this kid (Amone) is dynamite". Then last year he put the running game away and had been average at best ever since.
