Round 10: St. George Illawarra vs New Zealand Warriors

Well lads, just got home from the game, was up in the Northern stand , not a bad crowd, the Warriors had a few fans there too. I wasnt in a happy mood to see JF get smacked but it gave me a chance to see Reed and no doubt this guy will be our 7 at some stage. Now then, LPT is a big human, solid debut and lets hope we dont burn him out. TC looked cooked at the start of the game, he needs a break. The first half was a disgrace and if we hadnt scored a try in the dying minute of the half we would have lost most of the crowd, thats how badly we were playing. Liddle came on and made a difference but why did he get taken off, who knows. The question I have is DO WE PRACTICE FIELD GOALS AT TRAINING !!! Not only kicking them but stopping them, we have a team that has no idea, and it looks bad, really bad ! Well another 1 point loss but we really only have ourselves to blame, we'll be bottom 2 very soon, and deservedly so, finals are a long way off for this team. This is the second time this year I've watched them live and it hasn't improved, actually it may have gotten worse, we need spark in the halves but we haven't got it, not with KF there. Our famous saying "but there is always next year" .
It's always good to hear from someone who is actually at the game and seeing things that you don't see on TV. 100% agree young TC should have been rested after the Easts game. No doubt he's playing injured you just shouldn't burn your young players. I thought the crowd was a touch disappointing in numbers. Holmes disappointed me tonight up against Capewell and didn't utilise that advantage. The field goal attempt was poorly constructed. We desperately need a genuine halfback

The positives IMO are Holmes and Su'a are quality first graders, and our young forwards have a ton of potential and are probably contributing above expectation. However, the negatives (please see 20+ previous posts). Liddle provides good strike power but runs out of puff after about 20 minutes. I am starting to think it may be time to experiment with young Glover from reserve grade (in the halves).

You honestly don't think the coach told Kyle he is the main play maker and LKT he is second fiddle?
If he did then that is extremely disappointing. Of course you have your order, 1/2 back runs the show, but if things are not going your way you shouldn't be restricting your 5/8 and telling him not to play. Look at the game on now Panthers v Cowboys. Cleary running the show but his 5/8 Talangi has set up 4 tries and scored 1 himself. As a coach you need to have contingency plans

Whatever the crowd was, I think around 13 K , its going to be a lot less next time, there were a lot of despondent people there tonight, Just watched the PC, Flanno looks as though he's had enough, his body language has changed quite a lot since the start of the season, he really needs to make a call on KF.

Thanks for your report justa. Disappointing that you didn't see a win tonight at the grounds. Our team is like it is governed by a switch to turn them on and then turn them off. We definitely are trying and sometimes over trying. We are positive and then become negative. There is just no one able to take control of the team and lead by example. No speed in the halves which in this day and age is essential to help run the opposition ragged. No speed and power in the forwards to help make the yards needed to better our chances in scoring points. No rigid structure to ensure we have control over the opposition. No brains to see what is needed to outplay the opposition. Do our coaches identify the oppositions weaknesses and play to them?

I honestly hope that things turn around and the switch for the team stays on and be positive for the rest of the year.

I want to be that person to focus on the positives.
  • LPT is 19 playing in the front row. Very far from let us down. Gonna be a superstar.
  • Every 19 year-old potential superstar could do with someone to show the way. Hello JDB. Once again, yet again, our best forward. Couchman's and Stewart have work do do yet.
  • LKT has the best qualities of a half despite what my friend or nemeses jodragon40 jodragon40 says. The dude is 19 year-old yet how good is he compared to his halves partner?
  • Holmes is really ripping in.

When our line speed is good, we look great when it's poor we're shithouse. We can't rely on Val goalkicking moving forward, he's either 4/4 or 1/4, too inconsistent. I thought LPT was great, Liddle once again our spark in attack. Egan & Stewart dominating in defence.

Imo we need to continue blooding our youngsters & rotating them when they're cooked. They've all been good-very good. Unless we recruit for a genuine halfback, we'll still have the same game management & direction issues under pressure. Atkinson is more of a 5/8th than halfback, I hope he can become one but would need a few years imo.

These league scribes once they back a player they hang on like a limpet to a rock. Egan has had a solid start to his career but it is hardly what NC scribes are making out that he is a future superstar. Reading this on their website this morning, yet not a word about the debut of LPT. This kid is far more likely to be a future superstar than Egan.

Point 1 - Agree
Point 2 - Agree, Couchman needs a break
Point 3 - Disagree
Point 4 - Agree but disappointed me last night

Agree, if this kid, and that is what he is, stays grounded, continues to learn his trade and obtains that physical and mental toughness that a prop must have, stays injury free which is highly unlikely then this kid is the answer to one of our biggest issues, a go forward bookend. Im excited to watch this kids progress and I dont get too excited these days, well not since I was at the 2010 GF

C'mon mate Toby has been very impressive and for mine has come of age. Has the makings to be our pack leader after Jack retires. Stewart is a good emerging player. I see some of the same traits in his game as Jack to be honest, tho early days. I also see some of those same traits from Daniel Meafou.

As easy to find as snow in hell. Imho by keeping hold of the nameless one for so long we missed out on either nurturing a genuine half of our own or buying one. No doubt with some remorse we are now paying the price, having to scratch round for one when they have all been taken.

Our halves namely K Flanno, LKT, Ilias lack playmaker ability and need much more running in attack. They need to put on their thinking hats and work out the best moves in split seconds and they cannot do this. Reading the play with eyes wide open and the brain thinking to set the body in motion I know is easy to say from my keyboard but they are professional league players and should have learnt tons of stuff in the grades they have played in.

Are there any solutions to our problems?
Good points DD. Yes, none of our halves have the natural instinct of a play maker/game manager, something we have suffered from prob since Gareth Widdop. It is a major problem to fix. Still we live in hope that either Ilias or Reed who prob has the most natural ability, is our long term answer.
