How to make the NRL’s bottom 9 from 2023 great again

DRAGONS

How it came to this

Another season of disappointment for St George Illawarra, who didn’t start out on the right foot. There was little hope for their season and poor results cost Anthony Griffin his job after 11 rounds, causing skipper Ben Hunt to threaten to walk out on his contract. They finished with just five wins and a lot of questions about how to fix the mess.

Reason for hope

Premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan could be the man to turn things around after five seasons without making the finals as a club. There’s plenty of rising stars on the books and he knows how to get the best out of young talent.

Key issues

Hunt has been the club’s best player over the past few years and the Dragons need him to buy into Flanagan’s coaching to get the best out of the whole team. For now he’s agreed to see out his deal but keeping him engaged in the club will be the biggest issue.
Don't mean to sound like a broken record, or it's online equivalent but FFS, Hunt was not our best player last season! Very far from it.

Nice to see Coachman, whichever one it is, getting a prominent spot. Club has big plans for those two.

DRAGONS - SIONE FINAU

The Dragons have big wraps on this winger and this young gun signed an upgraded deal to join the club’s top 30 for the 2024 and 2025 seasons earlier this year. Finau made his NRL debut against the Warriors this season, replacing Mat Feagai on the wing. However, his first game didn’t go to plan and he was helped off the field after suffering an ugly ankle sprain, leaping for a ball. Finau will now have a full pre-season to impress incoming coach Shane Flanagan, fighting for a wing spot with the Feagai brothers, with Mikaele Ravalawa likely retaining his spot. Finau has speed to burn and scored six tries in his 13 NSW Cup games this season and is potentially set to make a name for himself in 2024 after a slim taste of first grade football last season.

I reckon barring injury he's a certainty to be in the round 1 team.
How about this for an idea?
  1. Sloan (after a lot of tackling practice after Christmas when he's back from injury.)
  2. Finau
  3. Feagai (as above for tackling practice)
  4. Suli (good player but TBH, he typically only runs straight and hard. Can he make a transition into the second row?)
  5. Rava
  6. Lomax
  7. Hunt
I know the lack of a genuine playmaker/game manager is a problem but Junior wasn't good at that either. I wish Herring were up to it. He is a game manager and playmaking halfback. Seems just not good enough.

That is still a slow backline. Suli needs to make a move into the second row.

Is someone at the club is reading what you have to say?

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has declared his side will play finals next year and revealed his son Kyle will get first crack at five-eighth.

Tyrell Sloan will start 2024 in the No. 1 jersey, while Flanagan will also trial Zac Lomax whose halves aspirations have been doused.

This fucker let Sullivan go and won't giver Lomax a chance in order to open a position for his son who should be painting houses, laying bricks or something like that.

God! Even went so far as to say there will be no pressure on Kyle because Ben Hunt is there. That must make "Benny" feel all warm and giddy inside.

And lurking in the wings is D. Young ready to pounce ......... That will be the next chapter if Flanno fails .........

I hope Kyle can surprise a few people but the bottom line is, no club wanted him until Flanno was appointed. Bud Sullivan on the other hand had no trouble at all securing a deal.

Look at the logic of his argument.
  • Lomax won't get a chance in the halves because Flanno needs backup for Sloan at fullback.
  • There are a few young halves at the club not quite ready for first grade so Kyle will be 5/8.
Well Flanno, who TF is going to be backup in case Kype stinks it up in the halves as he has done in his last 3 clubs?

And as for his plan, now on the back-burner, to play Kyle at hooker, lets have a look at his skills:
  • Strong defender
  • Quick off the mark
  • Good kicking game
  • Good passing game (maybe he can be trained to pass better out of dummy half. Not take 2 or 3 steps before passing.)
What could go wrong?

I'm gonna say Flanno is playing everyone. The Manu this is merely leading the media down the wrong path. He's in deep negotiations with one of the often mentioned 5/8s on the market but wants to keep his cards close to his chest for now.
