NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2024

I understand it's hypothetical but in my opinion, they did their apprenticeship last year. As for playing limited minutes, possibly their strongest point is being able to maintain high quality for a long time. Would be able to carry a utility on the bench if they were in the 17.
Toby hasn't missed a beat since being promoted and with limited minutes last week, Ryan was also just fine. Not out of his depth at all.

Might have been some issues with the salary cap. Seemed so strange the Couchman's were prominent in pre-season advertising while Flanno unsuccessfully tried to send BMM on his way only to start BMM before both of them. Like something is going on we aren't privy to.

that makes sense, be interesting to see how Mathew goes at fullback again, thats an even better looking NSW Cup side also, Bird struggled to do 80mins at the back last week, but rly good when hes still fresh.

reminder we have NSWRLTV coverage again 5.15PM, I might need to watch on replay later tonight, will drop some notes later, could be a glorious day for both grades... or a really tough day in the red & white office!

Off to another flyer. Won't count for much when they come roaring back in the second half once again.
Not going well. Unless they flip the script and come back in the second half, this is another loss and hopes for a semi final birth dimming badly.

Flegg aren't 100% out of finals with 3 games remaining (including playing the #1 side next week).. but even if they win all 3 I think it might be a bridge too far.. real shame cause I rly like the squad.. a mix of our new and old kids.. lots of big forwards including experienced heads.. plus all of our brightest young halves and outside backs... not sure if anything has held them back this year do we think? Competition is just elite?

We did have a few close losses mind you.. combined with a Top5 system that is pretty hard to crack.. even though their W/L record isn't dissimilar to 1st grade..

Second half capitulations again and again! Perhaps it's taken too seriously anyway. If 4 or 5 make the jump to NSW Cup successfully, that's better than having a good team across the 17 but only 1 or 2 likely to go further.

Agree, winning is nice but its a development pathway and maybe they just didn't gel well as a team or with the coach, but a quick look at the more experienced individuals in their 2nd year of Flegg:

o Spine: Ward/Quinn/Rumble/Hjaltason would be looking to move up to NSW Cup spine next year.. I think Rumble is a lock on fullback (unless Sloan drops back), I dont know who the 9 will be (if they r worried about Hjaltason.. perhaps Muhleisen could stay on a cup contract?), and im not sure how seriously they rate Ward or Quinn.. because i think we will buy a 7 yet, and I think LKT is the 6... these positions are no joke, these are first grade depth positions.

o Other Forwards: Liu/Webster/Tsougranis/Watchirs are our experienced forwards, Nick will def play NSW Cup, Liu and Webster you think would also.. given we are losing a few more experienced middles like AlecT and perhaps Coric and dunno about Fifita yet... I didnt include Stewart (or Egan) given he is already in Cup most weeks. Watchirs I dunno what they will do with him given he ends up @ctr most weeks.

Maybe a few of them can stay in Flegg another year yet? Esp for that first few months until the wave of SG Ball kids move up.

You don't really rate Ward?

I thought Egan and Stewart were already signed to top 30 contracts next year. So they'll certainly be in NSW Cup if not first grade.

dunno maybe in time.. but I wouldnt have him as my first grade depth for 2025 either.. we have to buy someone for our Top 30 (if not Marshke), either way Ward is not the starting 7 next year yeah, im not sure what his position is.

yep yep I just wanted to mention them to be fair, cause they are also 2nd year Flegg kids in a sense (or would be)... they r just playing up a grade in the case of Egan, and Stewart has played in both grades.

Not next year. Might need LKT to play 5/8 and Kyle the depth halfback. But I was thinking he might be possible for the year after next. Why not?

Maybe, like I said I dunno what the clubs thoughts are, but the rubber hits the road now as we get into reserve grade... and it depends who we intend to buy as our halves depth for 2025.. cause as of right now.... we have only 1x5/8 and 1xHalfback in next years Top 30. Flanno has to strengthen that quality.. look at the other clubs.. Warriors with Metcalfe and Chanel in reserves, Storm with Wishart and Pezet in reserves, Sharks with Atkinson in reserves.. our spine depth was really thin this year... we just got super lucky with all 4 positions...

Justa did mention 11 missed tackles for Ward last week also, thats at Flegg level... thats probably the biggest concern of them all in terms of moving him up.

The team gets sacrificed for the development of players.
The side was going well at start of the year with a stable more expirence squad.
SGB finished and Willie and the boys move in.
There would be conflicts with the coaching styles and Flegg boys with their nose out of joint.
