2023 was a tough junior reps season for the St George Dragons: 12th in Harold Matthews, 11th in SG Ball.

However, some exciting new talents in their ranks, as well as some development over the year to some existing players has given the Dragons reason to be optimistic about the season ahead.
The current train-on squad is oozing with talent, ranging from around St George to Cronulla, Parramatta, Penrith and Newcastle, as well some exciting players from Queensland.
While a lot of names in the side remain somewhat under the radar for the time being, we’ve picked out some of the names that we know are star quality and ready to tear up the upcoming junior rep season.
Check out 15 exciting names to watch.

Loko Tonga Jr (SG Ball)

Loko Tonga in the SG Ball Cup.
Standing at 6’3’ and 118kg, which for reference is roughly the same height and weight as Payne Haas, Pasifika Tonga is one you can’t miss on the pitch.
The former Bankstown Bulls and Chester Hill Hornets junior made his NSW Cup debut for the Dragons in 2023 and should be an absolute handful in SG Ball in 2024.

Finau Latu (SG Ball)

Finau Latu in the Harold Matthews Cup.
Another Australian Schoolboy representative inking pen to paper with the Dragons is young Latu.
A Minchinbury Jets junior, the powerhouse lock forward from Patrician Brothers’ College found the try line three times in the Harold Matthews Cup last year.

Jacob Halangahu (SG Ball)

Jacob Halangahu in the Harold Matthews Cup.
An absolute weapon who the Dragons would be silly to let slip.
The third Australian Schoolboys representative amid the menacing Dragons SG Ball forward pack in young gun Halangahu who captained the Harold Matthews side alongside Latu in 2023.
Another Minchinbury Jets junior, Halangahu is a damaging second rower who was crowned the club’s Harold Matthews Cup player of the year last season.

Shadi Hammoud (SG Ball)

Shadi Hammoud
Entering his fourth season of junior rep footy with the Dragons is the Dragons five-eighth.
Playing his club footy for Kingsgrove Colts under-18s, the crafty half found the try line five times in SG Ball last season.

Alex Futialo (Harold Matthews)
Returning for his second stint of Harold Matthews Cup footy this season, having been mostly a bench weapon last season.
At club level he’s been tough to handle in St Mary’s colours, crossing for eight tries in the under-16s, so no doubt he’ll be looking to establish himself as a starter in prop forward this season.

Brady Gallagher (Harold Matthews)
A no-nonsense runner of the footy who gets his team on the front footy with his rampaging hit-ups from predominantly lock forward and sometimes prop.
Playing club footy for Western Suburbs Schoolboys under-16s, Gallagher has good foot speed for a stocky lad, a quick play the ball and good offloading ability.

Corey Ackers (SG Ball)
Corey Ackers. Picture: Toby Zerna

Corey Ackers.
A weapon lock forward who you wouldn’t want to be on the end of a tackle from.
Deceivingly fast and agile despite his 100kg frame, Ackers hits defenders hard whether he’s charging the line with the ball or lining up a big tackle, reading the game exceptionally well.

Lyric Craft-Te Moananui (SG Ball)
Te Moananui is effortlessly fast and a real x-factor if given any room to operate. Playing fullback at club level for Kingsgrove Colts under-18s, he topped the league’s try count this season with 13.

Angus Clark (SG Ball)
The only Group 9 representative traveling north to play for St George is young gun Clark from the Wagga Wagga Kangaroos.
He’s a try-hungry hooker, having topped the try count for the league in the Group 9 under-18s with 15 this season, as well as a team-high three tries in a struggling Riverina Bulls Laurie Daley Cup side this year,

Isaiah Fagalilo (SG Ball)

South Coast's Isaiah Fagalilo om actopm.
Another exciting young hooker in the Dragons’ ranks from Queensland.
Good at engaging the line and using his speed around the ruck to capitalise on tired defenders, the Neebra Park Schoolboy is dangerous from close range.

Benjamin Geary (SG Ball)
A former Newcastle junior rep in Harold Matthews, Geary is one to watch out for in red and white this year.
He’s hard to miss, standing taller than most and packing a real punch.
Played on the wing for the Knights but typically plays his club footy with Port Macquaries in Group 3 in the lock role, allowing him to dominate through the middle of the park with his physicality and neat ball skills.

Tyler Peckham-Harris (SG Ball)
Ipswich SHS teammates Tyler Peckham-Harris (left) and Loko Pasifiki Tonga (right) are set to play together at the Dragons. Picture: John Gass

A recruit from the Ipswich Jets in Queensland, 165cm tall Peckham-Harris is the little pocket-rocket who uses his height as an advantage to weave around markers in the ruck.
Fast off the mark and over long distances, he’s tough for his size and has played in both fullback and hooker in the Mal Meninga Cup.

Jesse Williams (SG Ball)

Jesse Williams races away for a try
Lightning fast winger Williams is an x-factor talent coming back for his second year of SG Ball footy.
Dominated for Patrician Brothers’ Fairfield in this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup, notably scoring four tries in one match against Matraville.
He also scored a team-high 13 tries from fullback for Cabramatta under-18s in the Central West Div 1, including two in his side’s victorious grand final against Milperra Colts.

Live coverage of our junior reps remains behind a News Corp paywall. Have tried to convince the missus to take out an online subscription, but the women is stubborn, preferring to pay more for papers, I now find it difficult to read the fine print, but she dont care. NSWRL does sometimes show games live so will be scouting their site this season to keep a keen eye on our promising juniors.

Trial results
Steelers beat Dragons in a close Matts game.
In SG Dragons won with a try on the bell.
Both sides were missing about 5 or 6 players.
Tyler Peckham-Harris is ****ing tiny but was the standout, along with Jake H and Ryan Hutchinson.
For Steelers Aaymon Fitzgibbon and Bailey Marks stood out.
Were these games telecast.

SGI NSW Cup
A Ball game from '22. Saints half Nick Quinn, Steelers half Ashton Ward. Pick the best of the pair.

Despite losing and having less possession than the Steelers, Quinn wins hands down for mine. A good organiser, put three players into gaps with late deft passes, only poor finishing ruined tries. He led the team well and basicly was in everything good about the Saints. Their goal kicker too. Not sure if he is playing Flegg or Ressies this season..

I caught up with a very old mate of mine who is still involved with my beloved Dragons at a junior level in admin. Remember these two names, both are props and both barring injuries will don the big red V in the coming years. Loko Tonga and Jet Liu, 2025/2026. I was fortunate enough to watch Tonga play in the local U18 comp here on the Gold Coast, then he signed for the Ipswich Jets. The Titans had targeted him but we signed him. The engine room is still in the garage being fine tuned but if these two can turn promising into actual there is light at the end of this long dark tunnel.
