Round 9: St. George Illawarra v Wests Tigers

Morgan

SGI NSW Cup
We should have won that game when you look at some in depth stats.
Lost it from some poor errors in our own half and some HORRIFIC defence.

What’s happened to Gutho the last 2 games? Blokes been spacejammed

The young guys are the silver lining tonight, LKT/Egan/Stewart all impressive

Emre Guler has been really poor so far, i think we may see Loko next week and maybe Sloan dropped as well,!Suli and Sua have probably been the 2 I’m most disappointed in so far this year, they just haven’t put in anywhere near the level they were last year

Shit result but not the end of the world, LKT showed what he can do and needs to be given the reigns more against the warriors
I was thinking just that about Su:A and Suli.

As predicted at ht possession did even up. 50% each, we made 12 line breaks to 2 but couldn't convert our opportunities

In the end the difference was that Su'a mistake that led to a length of the field try. Unfortunately the 2 props we did manage to recruit just aren't good enough.

Klemmer 6 hit up for 53m in 34 minutes isnt going to establish a platform. I thought Guler went better and before his injury 11 h.u. 88m again though nothing compared to the 2 Tigers props, May 162m, Pole 124m.

I thought Leilua had his best game off the bench this season exactly what you want from an impact bench forward, 14 runs, 124m. We just weren't good enough on the night.

The future looks brighter though, Couchmans x 2, Egan, Stewart, mark those names down for our starting forwards in 2026 if fit and injury free. We just need 2 big bodied props to compliment what will be a forward pack to be feared.

I believe it may be time to give young Tonga a go off the bench, hes not ready for extended minutes but we need size .

LKT went well and will grow in confidence. Flanagan played the role of game manager, did his best but we lacked direction in attack last night. Sloan just doesn't get involved enough in my view and cost us defensively again last night.

To my eye Liddle is going better than Cook . Cook has avg only 6 runs a game for 60m a game, that is poor. Hasn't created the danger out of dummy half so far this season that we are accustomed to seeing.

Oh well on top next week against an in form Warriors team who are full of confidence and on a roll.

  1. Holmes
  2. Sloan
  3. Allan
  4. Suli
  5. Finau
  6. LKT
  7. Gutho
Cant see Gutho calling the shots somehow, yet love to see Holmes at #1. Sloans magic touches and plays from the back covered his poor defense for me, but it cant on the flank. So back to Ressies when CT returns and Finau with his permanent spot.

  1. Gutho (6/10 he gets some criticism for mistakes but the good things he does are overlooked. Haven't checked the stats but I think he ran for a lot of metres.)
  2. Sloan (4/10 Not much in attack and customary terrible defence.)
  3. Suli (4/10 MIA)
  4. Holmes (8/10 Dragons best?)
  5. Allan (5/10 didn't do anything wrong but seriously, Finau is so much better.)
  6. Flanangan (3/10 no creativity at all. Runs when he should pass, passes when he should run. Yet again our worst? Would've had a try assist if not for the Su'A incident.)
  7. LKT (6/10 how long has it been since we had a half who runs right to the line, looks out, passes short perfectly for the runner to score almost untouched? He needs to be given the keys to the team.)
  8. Couchman (6/10 despite the injury, a lot of runs, offloads, a lot of tackles.)
  9. Cook (6/10 Was ok.)
  10. Klemmer (5/10 obviously overshadowed by the Tigers props.)
  11. Egan (6/10 Didn't let anyone down.)
  12. Su'A (5/10 this bloke has gotten a free pass for a while. Halangahu and Egan might relegate him to reserve grade next year.)
  13. Stewart (8/10 Neck and neck with Holmes for Dragons best. Keeps getting better.)
  14. Liddle (7/10 Another good game from him.)
  15. JDB (6/10 Below his usual standard but still probably Dragons best forward after Stewart.)
  16. Gular (5/10 Tries hard. I think he did a lot of work.)
  17. Leilua (7/10 Good but backrowers should be able to play like that for 80min.)

I'm pretty upbeat after that performance. I think we outperformed them in a few key areas like run meters, defensive technique but our poor goal line decisions & attempts led to tries. Holmes misread, Sloan feeble tackling attempt & obvs sua dropped ball. Some parts were good in attack but felt we went too sideways a few times.

Stewart will become a gun lock, saw a little bit of his ball playing today. I though JDB should've played a few more mins, LKT had some very good moments. Liddle & Luch off the bench changed a bit of momentum. WT did chance their arm on 5th tackle when we rushed them & also their early shifts out wide. It paid off today but risky.

Sloan & Guler aren't 1st grade standard both should be dropped. Either Finau or Lawson for Sloan & LPT for Guler.
Yea we certainly did it just keeps coming back to stupid crucial errors, that's the 3rd game we absolutely should've won and if you looked af stats alone in those games you'd think we did. Top it off with a few things in attack that usually stick and we could've had 50 odd that game, Suas obviously, Val hits that pass to Allen to put him in the corner 9 out of 10 times, if Kyle buries on the line instead of spin and twist he scores himself as well, just couldn't ice those moments.

Agree with the second part as well, JDB more minutes, keep lids and cookie around that 50min mark each, Luch needs to do that every game off the bench he tore them to shreds in the second half. Think Sloan has a break and we see Lawson on that right side and fingers crossed a loko debut.

Think you mightve misread Klems he was on for 34min not 54 but your point still stands, he does soak up a lot of the hard early hitups but perhaps on for 5min to long in the first stint was my thinking he started to look a bit tired. LKT went well and hopefully gets some confidence up went a bit quiet after that mistake but got back into it later in the second half, just needs to shake it off and keep trusting his running game. Next week will be a real good test against the Warriors.

Less than 10 tackles is piddling Luch, lift your game.
Letting us down in the grunt work. Need more or sayonara.
Why does that not surprise me. So he was given the reins not LKT?
Mate go make yourself a coffee and watch the game first before getting yourself so worked up off nothing but assumptions and Fox stats, you did this last the couple weeks as well it's not good for your blood pressure. It was frustrating but there's a lot to like with our juniors.

TBH, I think his criticism is correct. Which part do you disagree with?

You are correct fat fingers. You need more than those minutes from your starting props im afraid. Unfortunately Klemmer is well past his best. He tries but doesn't have the impact as top props.

Agree with your comments on LKT after his error he was playing in my eyes to make no more errors so he can keep his spot. You shouldn't have a culture such as that. It affects playing your natural game.

To my eye especially in the last 2 games the team appears to be playing stress football, look at Gutho, Holmes to name just 2 players trying too hard to make things happen every set. Patience is a virtue and confidence isn't high.

2 big issues that need addressing this week, learning to keep possession, currently around 73%, not good enough and reduce the error rate. Otherwise I'm afraid the Warriors are going to be to big and fast especially if they obtain the majority of possession.

To my old coaches eyes young Couchman needs a rest. The last 2 games have caught up with him physically. Unless you have played prop in 1sts you don't appreciate how those big impact hits affect a young players body. He has a big heart and motor but he can't be sacrificed so early in the season. He has been consistently our best forward up until the last 2 weeks.

I'd suggest Tonga off the bench and bite the bullet and JDB to starting prop for next week. Just my views.
