Charity Shield 2024

It's official. Kyle Flanno is a decent NSW Cup half or 5/8. Way out of his depth in the NRL.
I indicated in an earlier forum his stat's in regards to winning ratio . His best season was in 2020 with East's and since leaving had a win rate of 12% I believe. And we make him our play maker, seriously?

Ben Hunt far from had a good first half but when he went off and Kyle became the main playmaker, was the moment the team became rubbish.

Let's be honest here. We were outplayed by a Souths team that were missing some big name players. Nothing has changed in the off season. There was no line speed or intensity in defence. Souths avg 50m a set we avg 35m a set. Flanagan is not the type of player that can manage a game , lacked any ingenuity in attack and was no danger as an attacking option inside Souths red zone. Our bookends are not big enough or possess the necessary leg speed to consistently make the advantage line and put us on the front foot early in our attacking sets. The stats will indicate we were well and truly outplayed by a 2nd tier Souths squad. It was bitterly disappointing. Trial game or not. It was actually for a piece of silverware. In old coach speak we were given a football lesson

I thought a positive was the young players. Couchmans, Tuitavake, Egan, Tamale. If they had a good hooker and halfback guiding the team around, I think they must be in the best 17. In the next trial, Flanno needs to have them on with Liddle and Hunt.

And the North Sydney 5/8 (Marshke) is better than Kyle Flanagan.

So with 20 min to go I indicated that Souths had run 200m more than us. The end stat's indicates that they ran for 500m more than us. That stat indicates to me that they just rolled through the middle of the park, set up their attacking structures with plenty of room to execute because we were back peddling for most of the game. 5 tries to 1 and ours came as a result of an error by them. Anyone who honestly believed that a new coach would magically fix our problems is delusional. The coach isn't on the field. God I'm so very disappointed with that effort or lack of effort. 5 of their forwards ran for 100m plus, we had 1. Anyone who knows me knows I am a stat's man especially paying attention to this particular stat. You cannot compete unless 4 of your forwards are making that 100m. I'm off to have a drink or 2 or 3 and cry myself to sleep.

Our playmakers between them made 21 runs for 129m , 6 mtrs a run. It was farcical

Looked like we just couldn't jump off the tackled player fast enough. Needed to wrestle much more.

Big takeaways for me:
  • Stop screwing around playing Zac on the wing.
  • Kyle isn't going to cut it. I think Flanno took him off in the second half because he was embarrassing himself. Who was halfback when Kyle went off?
  • The time for being conservative is over. Blokes like Eisehuth did nothing wrong but Egan needs to be picked ahead of him. And Suli needs to be on his toes because Tamale is right behind him.
  • What are we going to do with all the props? Of Tuitavake, Fiita, Frank Molo, both Couchmans and Lawrie, Lawrie had the least impact.

We simply cannot afford to keep Lomax away from the game on the wing. We have sufficient specialist wingers.

Have been saying consistently for years now that to become a competitive team again we have to address our lack of size and strength in our prop rotation. Stat's from last night's dismal effort showed in the limited timeframe that they played:
Molo - 10 runs for 102m
Lawrie - 6 runs for 54m
Fifita - 6 runs for 40m
Tuitavake- 5 runs for 39m
M Molo - 10 runs for 82m

I thought Su'a and JDB were just behind F Molo in effectiveness.

Therein lies the problem we just cant make the advantage line in our 1st 2 hit ups by our current props to give us forward momentum out of our own half, which then gives you time and space to run your attacking structures . Souths were consistent in this area and just rolled through our middle and edges.

Egan and other young forwards will get their chance during this season but you can't throw them into the furnace of 1st grade without taking the chance of burning them. Especially in this season where unfortunately we will again not be playing semi finals football.

I thought Flanagan was ordinary and in my opinion is not a play maker or a game manager, his previous stats indicated that. I thought Marske went ok, same as Tamale and T Couchman when they came on but it was clear to me in the 2nd half without Hunts organising skills we relied on Flanagan and we struggled.

Absolutely. I thought Flanagan and Hunt, "weren't too bad" in the first half. But I was wrong about Hunt because without him the team was a rabble.

In the next trial surely Flanno will give blokes like Couchmans, Egan, Tamale, Tuitavake some significant game time with Hunt and Liddle. And Marske as well.

And Zac is first player picked and is in the centres.

Sorry to say Hunt is average as well , "Hunts organising skill" it was like it's been for the last 5 years everything goes to him so how can anyone else shine ........ Hunt last night should have torn South's a new one without all their stars , but still couldn't control the game for us , so let's not just blame young Flanno just yet .......

Mate the team was a rabble as you say , but leave Hunt out there with the reserve lot and see how he goes .......

That's what I want. The second half team but with Liddle and Hunt on.

You are right about Hunt in the first half. He should've engineered a few tries. Though having Zac on the wing didn't help in that regard.

Maybe can't blame Kyle just yet but the pressure is already on.

Someone needs to find the key to unlocking Sloan's potential pretty soon or he risks becoming a lost cause. Not sure whether it could be Nathan Blacklock to connect him to instinct and exhilaration or, dare I say it, Choc Mundine to put a chip on his shoulder and instill some arrogance?
