Griffin & Hunt

Mitchell Moses is a better halfback than Hunt but not a better all-round player.
Not so sure about that. A better defender, runner and what I have seen of him a better ball player. Perhaps Ben has it over him with the boot and as a leader. But to my knowledge Moses has never held the reins at the Eels. I'd have Moses here over him any day. Betting he is not picking up anywhere near what Ben or Cherry Evans are.

Better leader has nothing to do with being a better halfback.

A SMH report claims Ben Hunt wanted to secure a clause whereby he could follow Griffin out the door mid-contract in the event of the coach copping the axe.

So it seems Hunt has heard that Griffin is facing the axe otherwise why would he ask for this clause as part of the extension deal. Plus reason why, as yet, he has not accepted the deal. This will end messily now and put a stain on the club when it should not. Hopefully it wont impede any decent imports wanting to join us.
Nobody in their right mind would join our club at the moment. There are doubts about management, marquee player, the make up of the squad going forwards. If nothing drastically changes in the off season I have previously mentioned that we will finish 12th next season. Time will tell

Halfbacks are usually or always expected to :lead the team around'.
Precisely. Ben leads but gets lost far too often as he lacks the natural ability to create structure. I have seen Moses occasionally and he looks far more comfortable in the creative department.

In my view Hunt has been outstanding for us behind a pack that at times would be hard up beating some of the better clubs reserves. Whether he wins the Dally M or not he has won us more games than lost. It's not his fault that he is not protected in the defensive line standing next to an enforcer and as a result opposition teams target him. He leads the way for 40/20s this season. In regards to structured attacks he is just 1 player in that structure if the other players are unable to compete their individual jobs in that structure it breaks down. All season we have had one attacking option from the play the ball area, that's Hunt, not Amone definitely not McCullough therefore any attacking structures can be easily defended. All good teams have 2 attacking options from the ruck and the best have 3. It's a big difference

I fear you have it spot on. Only way to avoid this is for us to is open the checkbook and do a Dogs like buying spree over past two years. That worked in spades as they were able to lure the most in demand coach to their kennel. The Tigers have been bloody awful, worse than us yet they are not hiding behind their cap instead audaciously making Cameron Munster a mult million buck offer.

I just think he's has more individual brilliance but fails to set up players outside him like Moses does but it's true Hunt has been playing behind a well beaten pack most games for at least the past 3 years.

I think it really depends on the young players Hook has made such a noise about re-signing. Really need a few of the forwards like Couchman, Coric and Shereb to be ready for first grade next season. If not, going to be a long season.

Let us just agree to disagree. You will never convince me Hunt is as good as you and some of the media make out. Regardless of whether he is behind a strong engine room or not. And how has he won us games. With a good 20/20, a timely little snipe from dummy half. Certainly not by putting a runner into a gap or providing structure so our back line, with some class in it like Lomax, can run riot. Nor saving a try with a diving bootlacer, not with his abysmal defensive record. We have won less than half our matches this season. So for mine Hunt as the team leader and prime play maker has not passed his test. I give him an F for failure.

I'd say that's really harsh but along the lines of what I think. I'd give him a C+. Behind a good forward pack and better 5/8 (I know Amone has talent but he's been poor for most of the year), hooker and fullback, he might have gotten a B+. To get an A he'd have to be much better at setting up teammates, as you said.

Agree. Muhleisen, O'fou too. Honestly these blokes all have promise so why are we looking outside our club. I do agree with jodragon, tho, we do need a top tier, prop enforcer with miles on the clock. But not a has been. Coric will be a fine prop in the future but like Blake Lawrie he will need time to develop.

better 5/8
Dont blame this bloke. The coach knew he was not a natural organiser and we already had one of those in the halves. This is criminal and we have been playing this way all season, firstly with Hunt/Bird combo and then the Hunt/Amone combo. Amone will be one of our best players but he needs an organiser inside him to flourish.

Unfortunately, unlikely O'Ofuo is going to make it in first grade. I think he's 23 now and in and out of NSW Cup.

Coric is a bit more skillful than Lawrie but not sure how he'll go making metres in first grade until he gets a chance.

Therein lies the crux of my criticism. I gave him an F in terms of the lack of wins not his contribution. I know every week he tries his guts out and is passionate for the Red V. But that alone does not win you games of footy.
F is in my opinion very harsh. To me it is a total failure

Why do you say this? Seems to me if he were that passionate he would have jumped at the 700K per season extension offered to him.

Passionate on the field. Perhaps he'd be the same with another club. No doubt the huge salary adds gloss to his being here. Greed and ego were the reasons he did not jump at the 700K imo.
