Griffin & Hunt

Sounds like common sense has prevailed. 700k is fair and about what he'd command elsewhere. Maybe he could get a little more but not much.

Brisbane Times newspaper reporting an unamed senior Dragons official made enquiries in an effort to lure Cameron Ciraldo to replace Griffin but he declined and has now signed with the Dogs. Also reporting that Hunt is baulking at re signing until the club ensures that he will be playing under Griffin until the end of his extended contract, wants his future tied to that of Griffin. Reporting Griffin has failed to meet the 3 critical criteria he was hired under and his credibility was badly damaged by the BBQ saga. His win ratio is below that of McGregor. Also reporting that Sullivan is awaiting the outcome of Hunts contract negotiations and will seek a release . New offer of 700k per season for 2 seasons has been tabled last night.Time will tell
Do you believe that? If it's true, Craig Young may have turned purple and told Hunt not to let the door hit him on the way out.

'If they rate Sullivan, which just last week they said they do, and want Hunt to play hooker for 2 years until Purcell or Hooper take over.'

This was posted on the R&R thread by Eric Eric. I am not aware of all these revelations, who else is?
It's true according to Fox Sports. But that's just according to Fox Sports. They also said the club was offering Hunt around 1mil a year extension only a week or so ago.

Report didn't name him but said it was front office and that's why Craig Young came out with his statement " He has my full support".

The 3 criteria he was originally hired for were:
Defence minded coach
Culture of success
Strict disciplinarian

Failed in all 3 and report even highlighted the win against the Titans we still gave up 26 points which history shows will not get you semi final football.
Would this be why he is going with such a team of plodders? Because he is only concerned about how few points the opposition score rather than how many the Dragons score?

Not in my view during the Bennett period his full focus was defence 1st the attack will flow from that. So his 1st target was to avg giving away 12 points a game over the season. In that season we were the lowest scoring team in the top 8. So as I always preach defence gives you a chance to play in a GF. If Griffin was trying to emulate that well the stats show he has failed.

Bennett's team was defence orientated but hardly plodders. Brett Morris, Nightingale, Cooper, Ben Creagh, Boyd, Sowie and even Ben Hornby was quick for a halfback. Nathan Fien was quick darting out from dummy half. And then add Gaz to the list in the second year. Only Ramsey and maybe Lomax and Amone could possibly keep up with those players from Bennett's time.

Never said they were plodders they were exciting to watch. The commitment to each other especially in defence won us our last GF. Never forget that wonderful season

The question is, do you think he's going with this team of plodders because he thinks not that they are better able to win the game but because they'll be able to defend better? Like his is trying to gain a pass mark in one of the criteria you mentioned because the most important one, win\loss is already unattainable.

Personally as an old coach of questionable ability, I have no idea what he is trying to achieve after he cut the assistant coaches and Graham. You just don't do those sort of things because in the end as head coach you are responsible, the buck stops with you. It indicates to me the club and team is divided and honestly if we are going to move forward he should be paid out and the new coach which I fancy will be Flanagan then determin which player the team is going to be structured around. Wouldn't be a bad idea to ditch the CEO Webb as he really doesn't bring anything to the table football wise.

One thing I disagree with. I don't think the CEO needs to have a lot of knowledge of the game. Probably better he or she doesn't poke his or her nose in the every day operations of the team(s).

Paul Kent talking nonsense in the DT:
  • Continuing on with the "low-balling" theme, saying it's a really risky move.
  • Saying good halfbacks win comps. Obviously not aware he has been on the books for 5 years!
  • Saying he's been by far our best player this year.
  • Strongly suggesting criticism of "old school" Griffin is coming from Phil Gould or those close to him.
  • Hunt is worth every cent what the Dragons are paying him t present.
  • Finally something about the general manager being responsible for negotiations.
I have been a staunch supporter of Hunt for a long time. I denounced Baldy for not picking Hunt at halfback and said media criticism of him was unfair. His poor form was due to Baldy's coaching. I'm still a fan but the bottom line is, he's 32. IMO the club should go with Sullivan at halfback. If it doesn't work out..... well, Hunt at halfback hasn't worked out either so what have we lost?

What's wrong with Flanagan senior?
We now know what Flanagan's Front Office role is. As General Manager he is responsible for succession planning, vision, and salary cap management. Well he has failed miserably at that or was the damage done before he arrived. What exactly is vision in a coaching/management sense?

Baldy, presume you mean Mary. He did pick him at half back.. think you meant hooker Eric. Mary and the attack coach at the time. His main job is to see the team play maker provides the side with structure. The A coach also failed miserably, probably, as the saying goes, that 'you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear.'

Kent has been around the league traps for years so had to know this. So that comment plus the other four leaves his credibility in tatters. Five years without making the finals (stand corrected), let alone winning us a premiership. Little wonder we hard to please fans berated Hunt's lack of quality during those years. It is only the first half of last year and this year that he has looked anywhere near the player that demands being paid the biggest bucks in the side. Even then he is overpaid. I am hearing we may go to $750K. More than sufficient. Any more and Bennett or any of those clubs north of the border can have him after '23.

Dunno about 'low balling' we 'hi balled' him when we moved him here and handed him a salary that no one was being paid back in 2018.. even the best half back play maker at the time, Cooper Cronk.
