Recruitment and Retention for 2024

Tom Deardon
He is already targeting this bloke. Even his own skipper says Luai is not a play maker. Mam's stats dont exactly say 'buy me'. Misses more tackles than Hunt and Amone, and that is saying something, plus only 9 try assists in 25 games. He is another running 5/8 same as Luai. Flanagan knows we need a play making 5/8 as his best mate could not organize a piss up at a brewery, reason he has Dearden and Welsby in his sites.

Welsby shows ample ball skills and vision in this footage, slotting in often as a receiver to make plays. Even if we miss Manu and Dearden, the only specialist 5/8 we are targeting, will Flanno want Welsby at fullback, as we will still be in need of a partner for the most hated man at this club..
Flanno has been talking the talk about bringing the best out of Sloan! Time he walked the walk.

Yeah, I rate Dearden above Luai and Mam. But Luai is a proven performer at the highest level.

I wouldn't pay any attention to recruitment advice from a rival coach.

Sloan has to get back on his feet first. Word is he wont be ready to resume training until round Chrissie time. Meanwhile he can pump iron in the gym to add some kilos, ensuring he can use his bulk to bust tackles as well as waltz round players. Will also give him confidence as may add some mongrel to his game. Then asap he has to hit the tackle bags and be told by the defense coach the correct points of a running man to tackle. As for being fit, we dont need to worry about that as the skinny bloke is the second fittest player in the NRL, having run the second most metres last season. Flanno target Tom Dearden ran the most.

Talking about Nathan Cleary. He obviously wants to keep him so is offering 'advice' to potential suitors that his team mate is ''not worth the $1m being bandied about as he is not a proven game manager''. He said play maker. Have we heard Flanno is chasing him. No because of that reason, he wants someone to be able to steer the team round the park, ala the way Cleary does.

I agree and personally think Dearden is better suited to that than Luai or Mam. Remember Dearden hasn't been partnered with a high quality halfback for a while.

Well that will continue if he comes here. Actually he is also rather nippy, be better at half but Flanagan aint moving his boy for all the tea in China, as my dear old mother used to say. Btw who was the last hi qual half Dearden was partnered with.

Telegraph report

Addin Fonua-Blake, arguably the No.1 front-rower in the NRL, is set to request an immediate release from the New Zealand Warriors on compassionate grounds.

This masthead understands that Fonua-Blake’s representative plans to approach the club on Thursday, requesting that he be allowed to return to Sydney to be closer to his mother and father

Was just wondering..... He says he wants to go to "NSW", not Sydney. He spent his junior years in the Gong, didn't he?

I only read, "closer to Sydney".

Won't be to join us. We have 2 more middle forwards set to make a mark from next season. I mean the Couchmans. Then we have a few more very promising middle forwards coming through and Lawrie and JDB.

Take him in a heartbeat, better forward than our entire middle combined.

For 1 mil or more a year meaning will have to let go one ir more of the Couchman's, Lawrie or the numerous young middles we have coming through?

AFB is an outstanding. One of if not the best prop in the competition. I just think he isn't what we need right now. Other positions need to be strengthened much more.

AFB for both Molo's and 100k seems fair.

Could have the best spine in the comp, but all lose their value behind a mediocre pack. We are missing that something special up front that someone like AFB would provide. Couchmans and the rest are still a while off that.

On the other hand, I doubt even the best pack can make Flanno jnr anything other than mediocre.

Why was he signed? Other than the obvious. Surely someone in senior management should have said something to Flanno snr about signing jnr only because of family ties. This is supposed to be a professional sporting organisation!

Welcome to the forum. That's a sensational avatar.

For anyone who can't see it because of a paywall, you can send me a PM and I can show you how to bypass it.

For those who don't want to do that, the article talks about the personal connection AFB has with several Dragons players. Specifically: Suli who he plays for Tonga with. Bird and Sele who were in the Dragons U20s team with AFB. And Dean Young who was the coach of that team.

If we could snag our junior that wasn't good enough years ago, AFB then that would be a big coup and tick off a very important box for me. A big bodied front rower who can consistently eat up the metres in the middle of the park
My two cents worth is that signing AFB and Manu would be a coup for the club but 5/8 has to be the priority!
