Dragons preparing $1m deal to keep rising star Tyrell Sloan at the club long-term

St George-Illawarra are poised to commence a $1 million-plus pitch to keep rising star Tyrell Sloan - the greatest indication yet that coach Shane Flanagan believes the 21-year-old can become the club’s long-term fullback.

The Dragons are intending to launch negotiations with Sloan and his management next week, additional acknowledgment by the Red V that they are eager to retain the exciting talent before a ball is kicked ahead of the 2024 season.

Sloan is one of 14 players off-contract at the Saints this season. The club has already begun talks to re-sign hard-running backrower Jayd’n Sua and the commencement of negotiations with Sloan’s management team from SFX Sports Group illustrates the club’s ambition to begin working through their off-contract list.

It’s anticipated the Dragons will table a multi-year offer of around $500,000 per season for Sloan.

500k a season is FA for a fullback these days.

Good sign he’s showing up in pre season.

If he kills it, he'll demand an upgrade anyway.

Yep and if the club takes a leap of faith in paying someone 500k a year for the next few years who has until now not shown the form to justify 500k a year, the club should reject any demand for an upgrade.

Experts rate each club’s 2024 recruitment

DRAGONS

Ins: Hame Sele (Rabbitohs), Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Kyle Flanagan (Bulldogs), Corey Allan (Roosters), Tom Eisenhuth (Storm), Jesse Marschke (NSW Cup)

Outs: Jayden Sullivan (Wests Tigers), Zane Musgrove (Warrington Wolves) Jaiyden Hunt (Broncos), Billy Burns, Tyrell Fuimaono (unsigned), Tautau Moga (retirement), Talatau Amone (deregistered)

Local junior Hame Sele returns to the club as a seasoned first grader and will provide some much needed punch to the forward pack. Kyle Flanagan was originally bought to transition into hooker but will now be starting in the halves. Corey Allan has already suffered a season-ending injury, while the Ronald Volkman would-be signing was a disaster. Raymond Faitala-Mariner adds experience but has battled injury and form in recent seasons.

Rating: D+

Potential landing spots for Adam Doueihi

St George Illawarra Dragons

Let's be frank here. The Dragons are going to be linked with every player who comes off contract. Doueihi is no different. I am not sold on Kyle Flanagan at six. The NRL future of Junior Amone is up in the air and looks to include at least a 12 month enforced layoff. Doueihi could potentially partner Ben Hunt in the halves. That said, Hunt himself is hardly showing signs of extreme dedication and could be on the way out.

Zac Lomax has supposedly been promised a chance to shine in the fullback role, opening up a potential spot if Doueihi is set to make that move permanently. Either that or they sign him as a specialist 14, something they absolutely don't have. At least to his quality. A fully fit Doueihi walks into this Dragons side. It's just a matter of how best to utilise him.

Shane Flanagan is a smart operator and he loves a bargain. Doueihi would have to be very realistic with his demands if this were to happen as the former Sharks Premiership winner isn't know for paying 'overs'. Doueihi has a lot of talent but I'd argue he has equally as much to prove. A move to the Red V could provide him with the opportunity he needs. This could be a marriage made in heaven if everything lines up.

Read this on Zero Tackle. I agree with most of it. Definitely bring him in as a 5/8. Second half of this season if possible. I think he's going to miss the first half due to a knee reco late last season.

I first reported it a month ago, gives you an idea of how long negotiations take and this was just for an average winger.
Yep saw that and now we have 2 of the most solid wingers in the comp. Nowhere near the fastest but get them inside the 5m zone 1 on 1 you would back both to score, problem still exists, getting them into that field position. Does this mean young Feigai is out a favour?

I don't think there is any guarantee he will be in first grade. They have Garrick and Saab on the wings and let their junior sign on with us. I can't make sense of that.

I agree no guarantees about any position. I just wish that would apply to our bookends. There always needs to be healthy competition within any club for any 1st grade spot. In saying that why bother signing a player from outside the club to play NSW Cup?

Dragons reportedly were interested in Jason Taumalolo but Cowboys rejected it. Complete BS! Not that the Dragons were after him but that if they were, the Cowboys would reject it. He's 30, going downhill very fast and is on 1mil a year for 4 more years. Judging by the way his form has gone downhill, he might not be in the Cowboys best 17 this year. Then he in 1 mil a year for 3 years after that!

If it happened, it would have been on the provision Cowboys are paying a very large part of his salary for the next 4 years.
