So all but 2 of our forwards ran for the necessary 100m + Lawrie and Bird didn't that as I mentioned before is a statistic that I relied upon it keeps any team in a game and usually wins that game but not tonight unfortunately. Nothing wrong with the effort, the pride in the big red v, and in themselves . Just too many unforced errors and discipline cost us in the end surpringly Lomax had 6. As I said at half time possession will even up, it did, what killed us was losing another player for 10. Otherwise it enforces my belief that we are good enough barring injuries or suspensions to be playing semi final football this season. Proud of the effort especially in defence

What was good:
  • Forwards in the second half.
  • Ravalawa
  • Amone in the second half showed a little more confidence taking on the line.
  • Second half defence.
  • Sims needs to be in the starting 13.
What went wrong:
  • Zac had his worst game in some time. Probably ever. The sin binning was harsh but was arguably justified.
  • Su'a's sin binning was a sick joke. Absolutely wasn't justified!
  • Lawrie needs to start games on the bench. Come on after the rushing defence in the early stages has slowed.
  • Bird wasn't bad but would better suit the team also coming off the bench.
  • In the first half, when down to 12 some of that goal line defence was pathetic.
  • We couldn't buy a 6 again call while Penrith were flagrantly slowing down the ruck.
  • Mbye was pretty good but I read above a comment about Mbye not being a suitable replacement for McCullough. He can come on to give McCullough a rest but not start at hooker. His dummy half passing isn't very good.
How to improve:
  • As I said about Lawrie and Bird starting from the bench.
  • Zac Lomax needs to be yelled at and told sometimes it's ok to just take the tackle.
  • Does Suli belong in the team in front of Feagai? I have my doubts. Went looking for a little work in the second half but never troubled the defence. Was also lazy in defence.
  • Hook needs to do what Gold Coast coach did last week. Give the ref a serve.

Only semi finals? I'm gunning for top 4.

What was good:
  • Second half was the best 40min I've ever seen from the much maligned Josh Kerr. By some margin!!

In the second half Rava took it to Kikau. Ran straight at him over and over. By the end of the game the latter was merely grabbing hold of Rava's jersey and getting dragged.

Penrith hold off brave St George Illawarra

The parochial Dragons supporters, inspired by a pre-match tribute to club legend and immortal Norm Provan, could sense their side were about to topple the premiers, especially when the excellent Jaydn Su’A scored to make the margin eight points with half an hour on the clock. When Zac Lomax scored with three minutes to go from a Moses Mbye grubber, the atmosphere was pumping.

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin said there were a lot of positives, and even though the 10-0 second-half scoreline did not mean two competition points, “the lesson will get us a few wins down the track.” “I’m disappointed for them, they didn’t get anything for their effort,” Griffin said. The Dragons lost hooker Andrew McCullough to a dislocated elbow.

Panthers flyer Brian To’o also hobbled off the field with a knee injury in the second half, while James Fisher-Harris required stitches above his left eye and will undergo scans for a shoulder injury, which did not see him return after 25 minutes.

Cleary said “there was a bit of carnage” on the injury front, and added Nathan Cleary was not ready to return next Saturday in Bathurst against Newcastle.

George Burgess was making his comeback from hip resurfacing surgery – 910 days after he last appeared in the NRL – but was penalised for collecting Jarome Luai with his left forearm after he had kicked. There were also calls for a crusher tackle when the big Englishman landed on top of Spencer Leniu after a hit-up from the kick-off.

Su’A, one of the early buys of the season, was controversially sin-binned for hitting Sean O’Sullivan in the back late, while Zac Lomax was also given a brief spell for obstructing Izack Tago as he chased hard after a Panthers’ grubber.

The Su'A sinbinning was absurd and also the difference between the two teams. Amone is going to be a target when defending. Is Ravalawa the best winger in the comp at present? Loamx caught the virus Ben Hunt had last week. Trying to score off every play but screwing it up instead. Only Zac caught a much more severe variant. I presume Griffin is going to have a word to him during the week. If Woods is back next week, who to leave out? Connor Muhleisen isn't in the top 30. He can't replace McCullough. I think the coach is going to go with Mbye with Sullivan on the bench though he might go vice-versa. JDB outplayed Yeow.

WHO PLAYS HOOKER FOR ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA?

If there was one man the Dragons didn’t want going down, it was their hooker.

Andrew McCullough dislocated his elbow in an innocuous tackle in the second half and will now spend 5-8 weeks on the sideline.

McCullough is the only specialist hooker in the Dragons’ top 30 squad which means Ben Hunt will likely have to shift there from halfback, or Moses Mybe will be promoted from the bench.

If Hunt moves it will see Jayden Sullivan slot into the halves which will dramatically change the Dragons’ attack.

Sullivan showed glimpses of his prodigious talent in the trials alongside fellow young guns in halfback Talatau Amone and fullback Tyrell Sloan.

The trio grew up playing together and could soon be given the keys to the side by making up three quarters of the spine.

But the fact remains Amone is 19 and Sullivan 20 and they would be the youngest and most inexperienced halves pairing in the NRL.

Amone has a bright future ahead of him but in the dying seconds against Penrith with the game on the line, he knocked on.

Utility Mbye has played off the bench in the opening two rounds and he could also wear the No. 9 jersey to keep Hunt in the halves.

The Dragons confirmed to foxsports.com.au on Friday night that Hunt and Moses are the only fit players in the top 30 squad who can player hooker.

Connor Muhleisen and Brad Deitz are the options in reserve grade.

REFS GETTING WHISTLE HAPPY
Rugby league greats Gorden Tallis and Benji Marshall accused Panthers halfback Sean O’Sullivan of milking a penalty on Friday night, but the refs still had plenty of opportunities not to turn it into sin bin.

Dragons enforcer Su’A was controversially binned for a late tackle on O’Sullivan as the NRL crackdown on protecting playmakers continued.

Su’A wrapped his arms in the tackle and didn’t hit O’Sullivan in the head, but the tackle was deemed late enough to result in a penalty and a 10-minute spell for the Dragons enforcer.

“Is he going to be sent to the sin bin here?” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

“He is too, gee I didn’t think it was that late,’ Steve Roach said.

So far they have put together 2 halves of outstanding rugby league. Judging by that, if they can stop clocking off for large periods, this team will be very hard to beat.

2 things that went wrong in this game but likely won't happen again.

  1. Su'a won't get sin binned for such a sort petty reason again.
  2. Zac Lomax won't make 6 mistakes in a single game again.

It was sub standard refereeing last night that in reality dictated the outcome of the game. Referees have a thankless job and criticising them doesn't really achieve much but last night's effort reminded me of certain referees in my day who wanted to be part of the highlights reel and it was a shame because it spoilt a good contest between the two teams. Unfortunately also young Sullivan staying down was unsportsmanlike behaviour and hopefully the coach will have a word in his ear during the week. So now we will see how we are going to go without a specialist hooker for the next 6 weeks and this could determine our season . Onwards to the sharks next Thursday

Doubt that. It's a professional sport and they will do anything they can to win. It's up to the ref not to screw it up.

I just saw the press conference. I don't know what the f*ck Griffin is talking about when he says "if they are the rules, they are the rules" regarding that sin-binning. I guess he hadn't had the benefit of seeing a reply yet. He was plain as day already committed to the tackle when O`Sullivan passed and it wasn't high.

Based on yesterdays game, next week's backline will almost certainly be the same though if Lomax does that again, he might find himself having a spell in the NSW Cup. The forward pack I'd go with would be:
  • 8 Woods
  • 9 not sure. I guess Mbye.
  • 10 Molo
  • 11 Su'a
  • 12 Sims
  • 13 De Belin
And on the bench:
  • Bird
  • Lawrie
  • Kerr (I've been a critic but that second half was by far the best I've seen him play, ever)
  • ?????? Is Sullivan still injured? Maybe the coach will choose to appease jodragon40 jodragon40 and go with Gosiewski. In all seriousness, I think he might be the best option if Sullivan is unavailable.
If Mybe goes down, that will be a huge problem. I guess Hunt to hooker and Bird to the halves.

Could anyone explain WTF the following is about?

Jaydn Su’A has narrowly escaped receiving a charge from the NRL, however teammate George Burgess wasn’t as lucky getting charged with dangerous contact on Jarome Luai.

One is either charged or isn't. It sounds like '****** narrowly avoided being impregnated.'
