setting up another try
I was replying to an earlier post. Sorry about that. So Tyrell has played two blinders in Ressies this season the one you are referring to and three weeks ago against the Tigers. I speak of his vision which was on show in at least two of his three try assists. The first when he glided between two defenders and slipped a clever one hander to his unmarked winger the other when he split the defense and with their fullback up, chipped long for his outside supports. The kid looks a natural with ball in hand.. unlike his mate Junior.

The closest one for NSW would be Jack de Belin, IMO. He won't get picked for political reasons.
That really is so wrong. Deserves to slip on a Kangaroo jumper. He has been our best and betting one of comps most consistent forward performers. Definitely at lock.

Well more good news for the Dragons faithful. It is being reported that the once taunted, as our next big thing, Tyrell Sloan, has had enough and asked for a release even though he is contracted until the end of 24. Bennett is waiting in the wings. Blind Freddy could see this coming.

Nothing surprises me with this lot , the next one wanting out will be Sully ..... This I blame on Hook , we were never going to be a premiership threat or even make the 8 , didn't happen , so he should have had the young guys around first grade amongst it keeping them interested and giving them game time ..... Not knocking the stuffing out of them when they make a mistake and then don't see them again for the rest of the season , but it was OK for the rest of them to make errors and keep playing ..... If you look at young Savage from the Raiders , been watching him closely he has mistakes in him , but they have stuck by him and he is improving ..... And is a weapon in attack , he made an error on Friday and Parramatta scored, but then he scored a sensational try ...... Sloan , Sully should have played games throughout the year , coming off the bench, not floundering around in lower grade learning nothing ......

Totally agree with that assessment. I said earlier this season that coaches such as ours that are old school so that to me is that although he has assistant coaches he doesn't believe in them or liase with them they are just figureheads. The danger in this is that type of coaching model means you can easily alienate your younger rising stars in your club especially when you make nonsensical selections using players who are actually no better than those young players and in fact just being selected to meet quotas or due to blind allegiance or loyalty. This has been a constant under this coach in the last 2 seasons and this move by Sloan will be mirrored by other young players such as Sullivan, Muhleisen etc.

You can also throw young Campbell for the Titans. Yes he has flaws, yes he misses tackles but my god that kid can move around the paddock with ease, same as Savage and Sloan, all 3 provide that ex factor in attack that you simply cannot defend using normal defensive structures.

This is why they should have been playing , they would have been much better to then tackle first grade ..... what I see is Hook coaches what ever attacking flair out of players , they become too scared to try anything out of what Hook wants .....

God have mercy over St George Illawarra head office idiots. Blind freddy can see Griffin is no longer a suitable NRL coach.

Can we call the club a laughingstock now? Was it the second last round, when any hope of playing finals was gone, Ramsey was sinbinned so Griffin moved Bird to fullback rather than Sloan? I'm still trying to get my head around that. If it were up to me, after that I'd have had Griffin hauled away for psychiatric examination.

It appears that the coach was making a point to the kid. It looked to me as personal and the coach didn't want the kid to show him up. So wasted him on the wing. Poor decision in my view

Where did you hear this? I saw Michael Ennis trying to sell Andrew Fifita to the Dragons but nothing about Sloan.

You think it's something personal? May be a poor attitude at training or talking back to the coach in an insubordinate way?

Just my view. I agree the kid needs defensive tuition but you don't put Bird at fullback when you have Sloan wasting his time on the wing. It would have done nothing for the kids confidence.

Can you think of any scenario where that (moving Bird to fullback and keeping Sloan on the wing after there was no possibility of making the finals) would make sense?

I would disagree but could understand if the making the finals was still a possibility. Coach could say he thought that would give the team a greater chance of winning at that time. As is, I can't make any sense of it at all.

It's nonsensical to treat a young rising star who is a specialist fullback in that manner no wonder he wants out

Very predictable. I think under a good coach, he will indeed turn out to be "a big thing".

St George-Illawarra fullback Tyrell Sloan and his manager Daryl Mather will ask for a release from the club at a meeting this week. He does not want to play under Anthony Griffin. We’re tipping he’ll be joining Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins.

The worst kept secret in the NRL. I think a number of players may feel the same way Sloan feels.
To me it feels Griffin was setting him up to fail. Griffin recalled him to fullback on a weekend with a howling wind and heavy rain. Sloan like every other fullback in the competition struggled under the high ball. Just like every other fullback. Why was he recalled that day if not an attempt by Griffin to set him up to fail. Ramsey was available and named at fullback. Mbye was also available.

Maybe jodragon40 jodragon40 has some insight on why a coach would do that if not merely setting him up to fail? I certainly can't understand it.

I said in an earlier post that it feels to me personal. Griffin is old school, coaches like this do not respond to young players making demands no matter how good they believe they are. It would appear that Griffin was making a point when dropping him initially based on Sloan inability to run the defensive line. Obviously he reinforced his belief that the coach runs the show not young players by not moving him to fullback in that game and used Bird instead. That is the moment this whole sorry mess became untenable. Senior management has decided to support the coach. As the old saying goes "Nobody is bigger than the game or their club".
